Technical Deep-Dive

ECDSA operates on elliptic curves - mathematical structures defined by the equation y^2 = x^3 + ax + b over a finite field. POY uses the P-256 curve (also called secp256r1 or prime256v1), which provides 128 bits of security. The signature process: the signer's private key (stored in the Secure Enclave) generates a signature over a message hash. Anyone with the corresponding public key can verify the signature is authentic without learning the private key. ECDSA with P-256 provides equivalent security to 3072-bit RSA but with 256-bit keys - critical for mobile performance. The same algorithm secures Apple Pay, iMessage, TLS 1.3, and Bitcoin. POY generates ECDSA key pairs inside the Secure Enclave during enrollment. The private key physically cannot be extracted. Signatures are created for content stamps and verification attestations.
