Anonymous Speech
Prove you are real without revealing who you are. Verified anonymity for whistleblowers, activists, and the vulnerable.
What Is Anonymous Speech?
Anonymous Speech is a zero-knowledge verification system that allows you to prove you are a real, verified human being without revealing any aspect of your identity. You can participate in discussions, submit tips, publish content, and cast votes with cryptographic proof that you are human - and absolutely zero information about which human.
This is the most privacy-preserving product in the POY Verify ecosystem. It provides the trust benefits of verification (filtering out bots, preventing Sybil attacks) without the surveillance risks of identification (tracking, profiling, retaliation).
Why Verified Anonymity Matters
Anonymous speech is under attack from two directions simultaneously:
- Bots and fake accounts - Unverified anonymity is abused by bot armies, troll farms, and coordinated influence operations. This abuse is used to justify removing anonymity entirely - requiring real-name policies that endanger vulnerable users.
- Surveillance and retaliation - Requiring identity verification to participate online creates records that can be used for government surveillance, corporate retaliation against whistleblowers, and targeting of activists, journalists, and dissidents.
Verified anonymity solves both problems simultaneously. It proves you are a real, unique human (defeating bots and Sybil attacks) without revealing which human you are (protecting against surveillance and retaliation).
Who Needs Anonymous Speech
- Whistleblowers - Employees reporting corporate fraud, safety violations, or illegal activity need to prove they are a real insider without revealing their identity to the organization they are reporting on.
- Activists - People in authoritarian regimes need to organize, communicate, and publish without their government being able to identify them.
- Journalists - Reporters covering sensitive topics need to protect their sources by communicating through verified anonymous channels.
- Domestic violence survivors - People fleeing abusive situations need to participate online without their abuser being able to track them through their verified identity.
- Medical patients - People seeking information about stigmatized conditions need to participate in health communities without their identity being linked to their medical concerns.
- Voters - Verified anonymous voting ensures one-person-one-vote without revealing how each person voted.
How It Works
Zero-Knowledge Proof
When you participate anonymously, the system generates a zero-knowledge proof that demonstrates "a verified human is behind this action" without revealing any identifier - not your PoY ID, not your biometric hash, nothing.
Unlinkable Sessions
Each anonymous session uses a different derived key through HD key derivation. Your activity on Platform A cannot be linked to your activity on Platform B, even by POY Verify itself.
Sybil Resistant
Even though your identity is hidden, the underlying biometric uniqueness ensures one person can only create one anonymous credential. One human, one vote, one voice - but no one knows which human.
Selective Disclosure
You can optionally prove specific attributes without revealing identity: "I am over 18" without revealing your age. "I work in this industry" without revealing your employer. "I am located in this country" without revealing your address.
The Technical Foundation
Anonymous Speech is built on the same proof of personhood architecture as all POY products, with an additional cryptographic layer:
- HD key derivation - Your master key (stored in the Secure Enclave) generates child keys for each platform. These child keys are mathematically unrelated to each other and to the master key.
- Ring signatures - When you sign an anonymous action, the signature proves it came from a member of the "verified humans" group without identifying which member.
- Nullifiers - One-time-use tokens ensure you can only perform each anonymous action once (e.g., vote once per election) without revealing whether two actions came from the same person.
The result is mathematically provable anonymity - not "we promise not to look" anonymity, but "it is cryptographically impossible to determine who did this" anonymity.
