Biometric Hash

A one-way cryptographic fingerprint derived from biometric data that cannot be reversed to reconstruct the original biometric information.

A biometric hash is a fixed-length string of characters generated by running biometric data (face geometry, voice patterns, fingerprint minutiae) through a cryptographic hash function. The resulting hash uniquely represents the biometric input but cannot be used to reconstruct the original biometric data.

How Biometric Hashing Works

The process follows these steps:

1. Biometric capture - Camera, microphone, or fingerprint sensor captures raw biometric data
2. Feature extraction - Key biometric features are identified (facial landmarks, voice frequencies, fingerprint ridges)
3. Normalization - Features are standardized to account for lighting, angle, and environmental variations
4. Hash generation - Normalized features are passed through a cryptographic hash function (typically SHA-256) to produce a fixed-length output
5. Raw data deletion - The original biometric data is immediately discarded after hashing

Why Hashing Matters for Privacy

Cryptographic hash functions have a critical property: they are one-way. Given the hash output, it is mathematically infeasible to determine the input. This means:

• If someone steals the hash, they cannot reconstruct your face
• The hash can be used for matching (verifying you are the same person) without exposing your biometrics
• Even the system operator cannot see or access your raw biometric data
