A cryptographic method that allows one party to prove they know a value or meet a condition without revealing any information beyond the fact that the statement is true.

A zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) is a cryptographic protocol where a prover can convince a verifier that a statement is true without revealing any information beyond the validity of the statement itself.

The Classic Example

Imagine a cave with two paths (A and B) that connect at the back through a locked door. You want to prove you know the secret word that opens the door, without revealing the word:

1. You enter the cave and take a random path
2. The verifier calls out which path they want you to exit from
3. If you know the secret word, you can always exit from the requested path (opening the door if needed)
4. If you do not know the word, you can only exit from the path you entered - 50% chance of getting caught each round
5. After 20 rounds with 100% success, the verifier is convinced you know the word (probability of faking: less than 1 in a million)
